JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder says he will use campaign funds to repay the state $35,050 for hotel costs incurred while traveling in the St. Louis area.
Kinder said Tuesday that he decided to repay the money because he didn't want even "the slightest taint or suspicion" attached to his name or public service.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Sunday that Kinder had been reimbursed $35,050 for at least 329 nights at hotels in St. Louis and St. Louis County since 2006. The newspaper cited hotel stays in the St. Louis area while Kinder was attending sporting events, society galas and a tea party rally.
Kinder insisted Tuesday that all of his hotel stays were related to official business.
He also said he will use campaign funds to rent a condominium in the St. Louis area so he does not have to stay at hotels in the future.
