BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV) – Residents in Belleville could pay a 100 percent property tax increase, even though many properties throughout the area have decreased in value.

The St. Clair County Assessor said some residents are paying more this year because their home may have been over appraised.
Several homeowners are even having to pay hundreds of dollars to pay an appraiser to provide the latest, fair-market value of their home.
Other than that, the St. Clair County Assessor could not provide any more specifics as to why property re-assessments have nearly doubled in costs.
Residents have until Wednesday to challenge their property tax to the county’s board of review.
In order to appeal, home owners must provide documentation of a recent appraisal, a personal property record card and recent pictures of their home in addition to others in the area.
City staff and the assessor review properties throughout the county, but due to recent budget cuts there aren’t as many employees now to go out and look at each home.
