ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A federal grant awarded to St. Louis may allow the city to avoid laying off 30 firefighters.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday notified Democratic U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan of St. Louis that the city was approved for the $3.2 million grant.
Mayor Francis Slay has been threatening layoffs for months due to rising fire pension costs. Now, Slay says it looks "very optimistic" that all 30 firefighters could keep their jobs.
