(KMOV) -- A truck driver is dead after an accident on Interstate 64/40 just east of Kingshighway late Monday morning.

The driver has been identified as Thomas Niemeyer, 48, of Bethalto, Illinois.

Witnesses tell authorities that the tractor trailer was driving along as normal, when the driver suddenly veered to the left, struck the barrier that divides eastbound and westbound 64/40, and also hit a structural beam on the Taylor Avenue overpass.

Niemeyer was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the wreck. It is unclear at this time what may have caused the driver to lose control.

Niemeyer worked for Sysco based in St. Charles for more than 10 years. Sysco released the following statement: "We are deeply sadden by a tragic accident that occurred earlier today involving one of our delivery associates, our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
