Pine Lawn officers honored for bravery in rescuing elderly man after flash flooding

(KMOV) – The City of Pine Lawn in north St. Louis County honored three police officers Monday night for their bravery in rescuing an elderly man from a car during flash flooding that happened in late July.

The officers received a Medal of Valor, the highest honor an officer can receive in Pine Lawn.

The officers said they didn’t know if someone was in the car or not until they heard banging on the rear window. It was then that they used a garden hose as a rope to pull Chuck Gilbert to safety.

Before the officers saved Gilbert, water rescue gear was not something the department even considered having. Things are different now. A small boat and life vests are next on the list of things to buy.
