Central Illinois police chief dies in car crash

CAMP GROVE, Ill. (AP) -- The police chief of the small central Illinois community of Wyoming has died in a car crash.

Marshall County Coroner Dave Lenz says 36-year-old William Bauer was pronounced dead at the scene of Friday's crash in Camp Grove.

Authorities say Bauer died after his car collided with a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old Wyoming woman at about noon. Police say she didn't see his car enter the intersection.

The woman was listed in good condition at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.

Two children in the woman's car, ages 18 months and 1 month, were treated and released.

Lenz says Bauer was in his uniform but wasn't driving his squad car.

The accident remains under investigation.

Wyoming is about 25 miles northwest of Peoria.
