(KMOV) -- A Hazelwood School Board member wasn't expecting he'd save a life at breakfast.
Karlton Thornton saved the life of a man who was choking while attending a church breakfast at the First Baptist Missionary Church of Kinloch, according to a release from the Hazelwood School District.
Thornton dislodged an object from the victim's throat, but felt weak afterward. Thornton is a two-time cancer survivor, which caused a thrombosis in his superior vena cava, meaning physical exertion can cause weakness or fainting.
After a short stay in the ER, Thornton was released and went to his daughter's fifth birthday.
Thorton said he was trained by Ameren to be able to respond in case of emergency situations.
