CHICAGO (AP) -- Democratic politicians gathered in Chicago to encourage Illinois' immigrant population to register with the federal government under President Obama's immigration action.

Obama's action offers protection from deportation and the right to work to an estimated 4.1 million parents of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents who have lived in the U.S. for at least five years.

Congressman Luis Gutierrez on Saturday challenged Chicago's immigrant community to "set the standard" for registration under the act.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin echoed Gutierrez and said the president's action, while historic, is not the last word. He said there is a need for comprehensive immigration reform.

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights hosted the rally at Benito Juarez High School.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn attended the rally but did not speak.
