(KMOV.com) – Police are investigating to determine if recent thefts from Jefferson County churches are related.
Three different churches were targeted in a three week span. A thief broke into the St. Joseph Catholic Church on Old Antonio Road and took gift cards which are supposed to be sold to help pay for the church’s utilities. Thieves also stole $2,000 in donations meant to help the poor. An eyewitness reported seeing a thief steal a trailer from behind the church around 11:00 p.m.
“It’s very personal, you know it’s your community, you grew up here, go to church here,” said parishioner Edward Pesek.
The Family Church of Christ Lutheran said it was broken into on the same say. The church said an air conditioner worth $2,000 was stolen.
“It is very unfortunate they become victims because they do so much in the community,” said Captain Ralph Brown with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said there is not a common denominator linking the crimes.
