ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The City of St. Louis has a new tool in the fight against freezing roads this winter, green salt.

Last year, the city experienced several equipment failures with the sprayer on the trucks because of the low temperatures. Due to the problems, the city decided to mix the salt and chemicals together to make the process smoother.

According to the city streets director, mixing the two together will allow the salt to work faster and better in colder temperatures. The new green mixture will be 30 percent more effective in keeping the roads clear during the winter season.

The new mixture will cost the city $112 a ton, with an extra $7 going towards the new blend. Last year the city paid $49 a ton for the salt.

The salt is green because the city used green food coloring on one of the mixtures to make sure the two were mixed thoroughly.

The new salt mixture will make its first appearance on the roadways around noon on Friday while crews are pretreating the roadways.
