JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) - Changes to disabled parking spaces outside the Jefferson County Courthouse are now putting disabled drivers a little further away from the building.
Six disabled spots that were next to the sidewalk along Locust Street, and adjacent to the building, have been split up. Three spots are now across the street and three are on First Street.
David Newburger of the Starkloff Disability Institute and the Commissioner for the Disabled in St. Louis says under the Americans with Disabilities Act, disabled parking spaces need to be as close to the building they serve as possible.
Hillsboro City officials say they made the changes to the spots after a request from Jefferson County officials who wanted permit parking all around the courthouse over security concerns.
In June, a man was arrested after making a terroristic threat against the courthouse.
