CASEYVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A judge has reinstated a southwestern Illinois police chief after village officials fired him three times in three months.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports St. Clair County Judge Stephen McGlynn said Jose Alvarez was entitled to a hearing that he didn’t receive before he was fired from the Caseyville Police Department. McGlynn’s order returns 61-year-old Alvarez to administrative leave with pay and medical benefits. He was on unpaid leave before his third firing.

Alvarez was dismissed three times between February and May. He was charged in April with two misdemeanors after an outburst at a public meeting in February. The newspaper couldn’t reach him for comment Sunday.

Mayor Len Black has said most police officers didn’t want to work with Alvarez. He says he is disappointed in the judge’s decision.

A hearing hasn’t been scheduled.
