CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (AP) -- Students at Parkway West High School in suburban St. Louis are using social media to try to raise money for a custodian battling cancer.
The campaign had raised nearly $18,000 toward a goal of $20,000 by late last week.
Proceeds will help 72-year-old Ollie Caruthers. Not only does he have cancer but his wife has been hospitalized for five weeks.
Students had been collecting money for Caruthers at lunch. A teacher heard about it and set up a Go Fund Me site.
Principal Jeremy Mitchell says Caruthers was moved to tears when he heard about the gesture.
