(KMOV.com) – The CrimeStoppers tip line is up and running again after being down since Friday afternoon.
A viewer contacted News 4 about the problem after he tried to call the tip line with information about a wanted felon. When he called, her received the following message:
“The number you have dialed is not presently in service.”
No other numbers or resources are given. When News 4 called St. Louis Metro Police to find out what people with a crime tip should do, they directed us to CrimeStoppers.
Lisa Pisciotta with CrimeStoppers said the hot line, which is not affiliated with any police department, was experiencing technical difficulties since mid-afternoon Friday.
“In order to solve crimes you want the number to be working so the public can be safe, so it would be a good idea to get it going,” said Brett Everitt who was eating out in Downtown St. Louis.
With the number of recent crimes downtown, safety is at the front of many people’s mind.
“We apologize for any inconvenience and we are working on the problem,” Pisciotta said.
In the meantime, the public was asked to call an alternative number, 314-725-8403, that was not publicized on SLMPD’s website where many would look if they were interested in reporting a crime. The number is located at the bottom of CrimeStopper’s webpage.
The tip line was restored as of Saturday morning.
