(KMOV.com) – Fire crews responded to a blaze in downtown St. Louis Saturday morning at the Hit Zone Bar & Grill in the 2600 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Drive.

"This building had recently been renovated so it's an old building that had a facelift," said Batillion Chief Wayne Luster. "That's why it's a little tougher to get it under control."

Fire crews say the flames were intense and were unable to get inside the building for a while.

"They tried to break down the windows with water, but it wasn't working so a firefighter had to go up there and break the windows," said Alyssa Stoving, a witness to the fire. "Black smoke came pouring out and flames just whooshed out of it."

It could be weeks before investigators get inside and determine a cause. The damage to the building was so extensive, officials say it's still not safe to go inside.

No one was injured during the incident.
