ST. LOUIS (KMOV) - A series of violent attacks in downtown this week have police desperate for information and are asking the public to call the anonymous tip line CrimeStoppers. However, Friday afternoon the line wasn’t working.
A viewer contacted News 4 about the problem after he tried to call the tip line with information about a wanted felon. When he called, her received the following message:
“The number you have dialed is not presently in service.”
No other numbers or resources are given. When News 4 called St. Louis Metro Police to find out what people with a crime tip should do, they directed us to CrimeStoppers.
Lisa Pisciotta with CrimeStoppers said the hot line, which is not affiliated with any police department, was experiencing technical difficulties since mid-afternoon Friday.
“In order to solve crimes you want the number to be working so the public can be safe, so it would be a good idea to get it going,” said Brett Everitt who was eating out in Downtown St. Louis.
With the number of recent crimes downtown, safety is at the front of many people’s mind.
“We apologize for any inconvenience and we are working on the problem,” Pisciotta said.
In the meantime, CrimeStoppers said 314-725-8403 is an alternative number tipsters can use. However, that number is not publicized on SLMPD’s website where many would look if they were interested in reporting a crime. The number is located at the bottom of CrimeStopper’s webpage.
“If I had something to report I think I’d be a little annoyed,” said Alysa Lambert, a visitor of Downtown St. Louis.
As of Friday night, Crimestoppers was still working with a technician to figure out the problem. The organization said people can still submit tips by texting STL to 274637 or leave tips their webpage.
