(KMOV) -- Illinois State Police are investigating why an O'Fallon, IL police officer shot and killed a woman in a subdivision early Monday morning.

Lt. Jim Morrisey of the Illinois State Police said O'Fallon police responded to a disturbance at a residence in the 800 block of Victoria Lane Sunday evening . Alexandra N. Nance, 20, of O'Fallon, Illinois was removed from the residence by police at the request of the homeowner and ordered to stay away from the residence.

Early Monday morning, an O'Fallon police officer attempted a traffic stop on Seven Hills Road on a pickup truck driven by Nance. Nance drove to the residence, from which she was banned, and parked in the driveway.

The officer approached Nance, who was sitting in the truck, ordering her out of the vehicle. Nance did not exit the truck and threatened the officer with a handgun.

Nance was shot by the officer after not complying with orders to drop the gun.

Nance was pronounced dead at the scene. A small caliber handgun was recovered from Nance.

The officer involved in the shooting is on paid leave pending the investigation.

Police have not released any other details about Nance.  At this point they're not sure who she kept going to visit but suspect there was some kind of girlfriend-boyfriend argument going on.

Neighbors News 4 found leaving for work around 7a.m. said they didn't know anything about the family there or what happened last night.  One did say she thought she heard a gun shot.
