This week in high school sports

First, let's take a quick look at some of Friday's significant games.

In Class 6, Howell(9-1) edged Pattonville(7-3) 17-14 to determine the District Champion. Each team took a different route to move the ball. Howell rushed for 250 yards (passed for 90) while the Pirates passed for 203 (rushed for just 20 yards). The 21 yard field goal at the end of the first half (officially at 0:00 time)by Zac Perkins turned out to be the difference.

In Class 5, Chaminade fell behind 19-0 at half against a fired up Parkway Central team. Needing a win to stay alive, The Flyers, with their back to the wall, rallied and rallied "big time". Three Quick TD scores in the 3rd quarter (all scored by Rob Standard) to take a 20-19 lead. Central scored in the 4th as Mikquel Johnson raced for a 60 TD. Chaminade came back again with another Standard score to win 26-25.

In the same district, it all came down to the very last play of the game. Parkway North, trailing 29-24 to the defending State Champs-Webster Groves, was on the 3 yard line. WG was able sack the North QB on a pass attempt to advance. The Statesman were behind 24-20 entering the final quarter. Losing this heart-breaker ends the season for the Vikings since Chaminade won.

Park Hill South (7-3) wins the District crown with 20-14 win over Ft Osage. For the Panthers, it's the first district championship since 2004 and it was accomplished under Mark Simcox in his first year at the Panther helm.

Class 4 had the tightest entry into the playoffs. KC Center (8-2) had to go three OT's to beat Grandview (2-8) 22-21. That's right...3 OT for an 8-2 team over an 2-8 team! Center gains the runner-up spot in District 14.

Now for those perfect 10's!

Class 6 has two 10-0- defending Champion- Hazelwood Central and Rockurst. Both of these teams have survived several "close calls" this year. Central won the first 3 games by 1, 7 and 3 points respectively. However, since that time, the Hawks have been flying high. Meanwhile, the Hawklets beat Blue Springs 7-6 and went OT to beat Blue Springs South in the early weeks. Guess who Rockhurst has up for the first 2 playoff games ?  The Wildcats and Jaguars !!

Class 5 has only one unbeaten team. It's the defending Champion, Webster Groves. The Statesman had their roughest game of the year this Friday against the Parkway North Vikings. WG should really not be challenged for the first couple rounds.

There are three teams in Class 4 with perfect records. Sikeston Bulldogs, who made a long playoff run last year, are back. Two 2009 Dome teams, who are very familiar names, the Webb City Cardinals and the Kearney Bulldogs are also there. Last year, Kearney knocked off the Cardinals in the semifinals of STATE as they beat Bowling Green in the Dome for the title.

Class 3 has the defending Champs, Cassville, as unbeaten. In fact 3 of the defending champions are unbeaten in 2010. John Burroughs is another 10-0 team. The Bombers, wearing the ABC crown, bounce back after a 5-4 record in 09 and 4-5 in 08. The Richmond Spartans also are unbeaten.

Class 2 has four teams with unblemished records. Caruthersville and Maplewood Richmond-Hts could square off in the top half semifinals. Meanwhile, the bottom half semis could see the 10-0 Centralia Panthers facing the 10-0 Penney Hornets. All four of these teams have some obstacles to jump prior to those semifinals.

Class 1 has three 10-0 teams. Likely to see each other in the second round next Monday, the Tipton Cardinals and Concordia Orioles will put it on the line early. The Westran Hornets are the only unbeaten team in the bottom half of the brackets.
