(KMOV) -- The Granite City Police Department has arrested a man who, they say, got into a fight with an officer in the suspect's hospital room.
According to police, a female officer was guarding a wanted felon as he was being treated at Gateway Regional Medical Center. Once the officer uncuffed John Weiser, 37, from the bed, the prisoner attacked the female officer. The officer attempted to use her taser to stop the him, however only one probe hit the suspect. Weiser then struck the officer in the head with a dangling handcuff, injuring the officer.
Weiser was able to make it out of the hospital, but a caller alerted police of a suspicious person walking down 20th street around Lee Ave. Officers were deployed and eventually spotted him on Edwardsville Road near 14th street.
Officers were then eventually able to apprehend the suspect after he struggled with officers again.
This happened Wednesday around 3:15 in the afternoon.
Weiser is charged with Armed Robbery, Aggravated Battery and Escape, which are all felonies.
The officer was released from the hospital after receiving stitches to her head.
