(KMOV) – A prisoner is back behind bars in Granite City, Illinois after he injured a police officer and made a brief escape Wednesday afternoon at the Gateway Regional Medical Center.
The injured officer is a 10-year veteran of the Granite City police force. She received stitches after being cut in a scuffle with the suspect.
The prisoner was being treated for a medical condition on the fifth floor and was being released into the custody of police who were taking him in on theft and weapons charges.
He then escaped, but was spotted about 10 minutes later six blocks away near a steel plant.
Police are not releasing his name, but he is back behind bars and will face new charges in the coming days.
