The high school football playoffs in Illinois are scheduled to start this week. The East St. Louis High School football team is undefeated but the Flyers could be knocked out of the playoffs before the first game. On Friday, star running back Anthony Pierson was ruled ineligible to play because of questions about his residency. If the school district can't prove Pierson lives in the school district, the Illinois High School Athletic Association could rule that ESL High School has to forfeit all nine of its victories this season, which would bump the team from the playoffs.
An IHSA spokesman told me that they are waiting to hear from East St. Louis High School and expect to make a decision before the end of the day. If the Flyers are ruled ineligible, the IHSA will need to decide whether to bring in another team to replace ESL High School and reseed the entire playoffs, which would be a very difficult job. The organization could also decide to reseed the quadrant that the Flyers are in or just declare a forfeit for their game and give their opponent, Belleville west, an automatic win.
A lot is riding on the IHSA's decision today. We're monitoring the situation and will keep you posted.
