(KMOV) Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is visiting the Gillespie School District to announce funding for a new elementary school.
Gillespie’s prior school was deemed unsafe and not habitable because of mine subsidence. Students, staff and teachers have been using mobile pods.
Insurance could not begin to cover the cost of the new building, so Governor Quinn will appear with Paul Skeans, the superintendent, to announce $18 million in funding for the project.
The school will be built to be energy efficient and environmentally friendly. This project should provide about 150 jobs.
Gillespie is about 50 miles northeast of St. Louis.
