Starting next school year, elementary school students in Francis Howell will start school on August 8 and it will end the following May. This will end a year round school calendar that's been in place in this district for 40 years. Many got used to the extended breaks and constant flow of learning.
The change in Francis Howell has not come easy. Many here are divided on it, saying the year round school year is a great benefit to learning. Those in favor of the change say this needs to be done to save money, and the quality of education is about he teachers not the year round schedule. The savings amount to about a million dollars a year, $750,000 of that in transportation costs.
The change will affect about 7,000 elementary students. Class days will also be extended by 5 minutes. All eyes out here will focus on what happens in the classroom during the 2011-2012 school year.
