(KMOV) -- A St. Louis police officer witnessed a shooting and returned fire.
It happened around 6:00 p.m. on Thursday in the 5900 block of Union near Bircher in north St. Louis.
According to police, the officer was on routine patrol when he saw a black man in his late teens or early 20s start firing at a pedestrian.
Police say the officer feared for his own safety and opened fire on the suspect.
The suspect got into a black Dodge Magnum with dark tinted windows and fled the scene.
The car sped off and eventually got onto Interstate 70 westbound. Police followed the car to I-70 and I-170, but lost it.
It is unclear whether or not the police officer shot the suspect.
The victim of the original shooting was rushed to the hospital. He was hit in the stomach and buttocks and is listed in stable condition.
