(KMOV)—A woman has been charged after stealing a car and then leading police on a chase.
Cassandra Richardson, 20, of Cahokia, has been charged with one count Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.
Authorities say around 12 p.m. Tuesday police received a call of a stolen vehicle. The victim advised that the vehicle was left running unattended to warm up. The vehicle was spotted by a detective on I-161 near Frank Scott Parkway who followed it until a marked unit arrived. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle at 85th & State St. in East St. Louis, however Richardson took off speeding away. Officers from Belleville, East St. Louis, Caseyville, Swansea, MEATTF, U S Marshall Service, and Illinois State Police all assisted in following the vehicle. When Richardson attempted to turn at 59th and State St. she lost control and crashed. The vehicle began burning, police then pulled Richardson from the burning vehicle. Richardson was taken to a local hospital. A bystander was also injured by debris from the stolen vehicle and was also transported to a local hospital.
Bail has been set at $200,000. She is currently still hospitalized. No word on her condition. She was last listed in serious but stable condition.
