(KMOV) -- What began as celebratory gun shots ringing in the new year ended with police shooting a man and a toddler getting hit by a police cruiser.

This all started around midnight on Friday in south St. Louis.

Officers were investigating a call for shots fired in the 4600 block of Idaho when they saw a man shoot a gun into the air.

According to police, one of the officers told the man to drop his gun. That's when police say the man fired his gun at the officers. The officers returned fire and the man was hit in the side and the hand. A bullet also grazed his head.

The man was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition. Authorities say he was alert and talking when he was transported.

The police officers then entered the home where the incident began. According to police, when the officers came in, several people ran out a door in an attempt to flee from police. As these people were running from the home, a four-year-old boy was left unattended and ran into the street.
Police say that officers responding to the officer-involved shooting were driving down the street in their patrol car, when the toddler ran into their path and was hit by the police vehicle.
The child was taken to a local hospital with a cut on his head and no other visible injuries.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in all officer-involved shootings.
