Metro-East insurer sues to avoid payment

EDWARDSVILLE - An area insurance company is asking a judge to declare it has no responsibility to pay a claim for a huge house explosion last February because the homeowner allegedly caused the blast.

Madison Mutual Insurance Co. has filed suit in Madison County Circuit Court, claiming Laura J. Williams disconnected the gas line or conspired to disconnect it, which led to the huge blast and fire at her former home at 131 Emerald Way, Pontoon Beach.

Williams has not been charged with a crime, but the explosion and fire were termed "suspicious" by Long Lake Fire Chief Dan Kreher shortly after the Feb. 13 blast. The FBI reportedly is investigating the case.
