(KMOV) -- Cahokia police announced on Tuesday they have concluded their investigation into the death of 18-year-old Tyra Whittaker. The case has been handed over to the St. Clair County Attorney's Office.
After reviewing the complaint, the state's attorney's office charged 19-year-old Kyle D. Starks with first degree murder. His bond is set at $1 million.
Authorities received a 911 call around 9:30 p.m. Sunday night from the 400 block of St. Thomas. When police arrived on the scene, they found Tyra Whittaker with several stab wounds to the neck. She was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say Starks repeatedly stabbed Whittaker in the neck after she tried to end the relationship.
According to Whittaker's family, she is from Washington Park but was in Cahokia visiting Starks. The family says Starks' mother heard noises in the bedroom, walked in and found Whittaker dead. Police immediately took Starks into custody.
Whittaker's family say the two have been high school sweethearts and were to be married, February 14th, Valentine's Day.
