Snow contributes to fatal crashes over the weekend

Snow-covered roads factored into two separate vehicular accidents over the weekend and resulted in the death of one of the drivers.

Jason C. Starr, 30, of Litchfield, was killed and Monteaz E. Walton, 29, of Carlinville, was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 6:13 a.m. Sunday on Illinois Route 16. Neither was wearing a seat belt.

Starr, driving a 2004 Dodge Stratus, and Rose J. Lucykow, 55, of Gillespie, were traveling east on Illinois Route 16 approaching Hornsby Road in Macoupin County. According to an Illinois State Police District 18 release, Starr was driving faster than Lucykow and lost control of his car on the snowy road. His car struck the rear of Lucykow's 2005 Ford F-250 pickup. Lucykow lost control of her truck and ended up in a field to the left of the road. Starr's vehicle went into the right ditch, struck a road sign and overturned, coming to rest on its roof.

Starr was pronounced dead at the scene. Walton, a passenger in Starr's car, and Lucykow were taken to St. Francis Hospital with injuries. Lucykow was charged with driving with a suspended license.
