GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A newborn baby who was severely beaten is in serious condition at a local hospital, and prosecutors said the parents were responsible.
The 7-week-old infant was injured badly and suffered broken ribs and a broken leg, according to the Madison County Prosecuting Attorney Tom Gibbons. Gibbons said that the two young parents did not protect their child, instead they left him in serious condition.
Gibbons said the suspects are Ashlee Wethington, 18, and Kamryn Kerr, 20. Both suspects allegedly squeezed their infant boy until multiple ribs broke, and they pulled his leg until it broke as well. Though the couple took the infant to the hospital, doctors sensed something was not right and called police.
Residents in the couple’s Granite City neighborhood said they have seen trouble at the couple’s house before. But they cannot fathom how the couple could hurt an innocent infant.
The couple faces child battery and endangerment charges. They are being held on a $200,000 bond.
