(KMOV.com) – A south St. Louis County family says the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) is the reason why a sinkhole in their backyard is an ongoing problem.
The Starks family says part of their backyard has sunk around 8 feet. The family said their five month old puppy fell in the sinkhole and could not get out. During the rescue, the family said its 14-year-old daughter was also trapped waist deep in the sinkhole.
The family says it has met with MSD about the sinkhole at least three times over the past 15 years, and also said MSD has filled the hole twice.
MSD told News 4 the sinkhole is their not responsibility, and it was previously filled as a courtesy. The agency said it does not have the funding to fix the sinkhole. MSD also claims that sinkholes are part of the natural landscape in south St. Louis County and that homeowners will have to hire companies to deal with the problem in the future.
