MILWAUKEE - The Cardinals will be without Matt Holliday this afternoon as the Redbirds try to extend the Brewers September misery in the finale of a crucial four game series.
Manager Mike Matheny said before the game that Holliday's back had tightened up and he would sit out as a precaution.
"Matt came out of the game last night because his back was tightening ," Matheny said. "He told us it had been tight since we got here (Milwaukee) but that it loosened up as the day went on. But last night we noticed some of his swings were not right. It kept grabbing so (he was removed for Randal Grichuk).
Matheny said Holliday has taken a physical beating lately between normal pounding of a long season and being hit by pitches lately.
"He's as durable as anyone in the game," the Cards manager said. "But we just felt this was the right thing to do."
Matheny also said the Cardinals would call up more players from Memphis, now that their season was over. He said he did not have permission yet to disclose who would join the team, but said they would in in Cincinnati for the opening of a four-game set there starting .
He said the organization likes to promote players in September as a reward and for the experience of seeing how veterans in a play-off race go about the business of preparing during the drive for the play-offs.
But, he said, the number one reason to promote young players is to help the team win.
"Next to spring training, there is no greater learning experience," he said. "But we bring up guys who can help us. It's about winning. Every player we've brought up so far, we've used."
The Redbirds will send Adam Wainwright to the mound against the Brewers Jimmy Nelson. The Cards pummeled the young Brewers starter in July in his season debut.
