ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A St. Louis County officer was taken to a hospital after a gunshot struck him in his gun belt overnight.

Officers say they received a call from neighbors that a man was attempting to enter a home in the 5800 block of Eagle Valley Drive around midnight Sunday morning.  The neighbor told police she saw a woman running out of the rear of the residence.

When officers arrived on the scene, they saw a black man quickly enter a gray Dodge Avenger. Police say the vehicle immediately backed out of a parking space upon seeing the officers. According to police, when they attempted to approach the vehicle it came towards them, passing the officers as it began exiting the parking lot.

Authorities say the vehicle stopped abruptly and a black male began firing shots at the officers. According to police, one of the rounds struck a St. Louis County Police Officer in his gun belt while an officer from Velda City returned fire on the suspect.

Police say the vehicle fled the scene at a high rate of speed.

It is unknown if the suspect was struck by any of the return fire from the officer.

The officer was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the suspect is still at large, but have not released a description.
