(BaseballStL) -- Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong gave the Cardinals base runners in the ninth, as they both singled off Jonathan Broxton.

However, Peter Bourjos struck out on a caught foul tip and then Daniel Descalso hit into a fielder's choice to take Wong off the bases at second. Descalso was able to pick up second base while AJ Pierzynski pinch hit.

Pierzynski flied out to left field as the Brewers snapped their nine game losing streak and pulled within 3.0 games of first place in the NL Central.

In the seventh inning the Redbirds got a run from a pinch hit from Oscar Taveras and the speed of Peter Bourjos.

Bourjos doubled with one out, but after Daniel Descalso was called out on strikes, it looked like the Cardinals might squander their opportunity. However, an infield single from Taveras scored the lightning fast Bourjos as the Cards cut into the Brewers lead.

Jhonny Peralta put the Cardinals on the board with just one swing in the sixth inning.

The Cardinals shortstop drove as ball over the wall for his 19th home run of the season, however, it was the only run the Cardinals got in that inning as they trailed the Brewers 4-1.

But the Brewers got the home run back with their own from Khris Davis as he blasted his 22nd homer of the season to extend the Brewers lead to 6-1.

The Milwaukee Brewers struck first Friday night on a two-run single from their lead off man Scooter Gennett.

Cardinals starter John Lackey cruised through the first two innings, but in the third he gave up back-to-back singles to Lyle Overbay and Jean Segura to begin the inning. His counter-part Mike Fiers sacrificed both runners over a base that allowed both to score on Gennett's hit for a 2-0 lead.

Gennett then tried to swipe second with one out, but Yadier Molina cut him down just before he got to the bag. The second base umpire originally called Gennett safe, but upon a review from Mike Matheny, it was confirmed as an out.

Gennett again gave Lackey trouble in the fifth inning with another RBI to deep center field that Peter Bourjos couldn't track down. Then Jonathan Lucroy then singled in Gennett to extend the Brewers lead to 4-0.
