BaseballStL — The Cardinals have made two additions to their roster for Thursday, activating Michael Wacha as expected from the 60-day disabled list and purchasing the contract of Xavier Scruggs from Triple-A Memphis.
Both players will get right to work, with Wacha starting on the mound and Scruggs playing first base in his MLB debut.
The 26-year-old was a 19th round pick out of UNLV in 2008, and has long been a power presence in the Cardinals’ system. He’s belted 134 career homers in 771 minor league games, driving in 448 RBIs. More impressively, he’s had at least 20 bombs in each of his last five seasons.
This season, Scruggs garnered attention with a breakout performance in Memphis, hitting .286 with 21 homers and 87 RBIs. He closed August with a .345 average and eight long balls.
Scruggs will bat seventh behind Kolten Wong as Matt Adams gets a rest. He will wear number 59.
As two players came on to the 40-man roster, one was moved off.
Shane Robinson was transitioned to the 60-day DL having undergone season-ending shoulder surgery. The 29-year-old partially dislocated his shoulder on a slide in Pittsburgh, damaging the bone in the process.
Oscar Taveras will start another day on the bench as Peter Bourjos gets the start in center field, moving Jon Jay to right.
Bourjos has found his swing of late, hitting .389 in 18 at bats over his last eight games. He’s driven in three, including a game-winner Wednesday, and scored four times. The Cardinals are 7-1 in the eight games he’s played in.
