Wong leaves game early after banging head on ground

(BaseballStL) – Cardinals’ second baseman Kolten Wong left Sunday’s game in the eighth inning after hitting his head on the ground in an attempt to make a diving catch.

The first batter of the inning, Chris Valaika, hit a short pop up in right field that Wong gave chase to as he fought off the sun. Instead, the ball fell to the ground as Wong went tumbling backwards and slammed his head on the outfield grass.

Trainers came out to talk with Wong, and he left the game and was replaced by Pete Kozma.

“He’s sore,” manager Mike Matheny said, “There wasn’t signs of concussion. A couple of different doctors have looked at him already. He was going all out. He knew how important that out was and he almost made a really nice catch.”

Wong said he didn’t expect the injury to keep him out of the lineup long, but did expect to miss Monday’s game against the Pirates.
