(BaseballStL) -- In an effort to give Matt Adams the day off, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has opted to start Daniel Descalso at first base while the team recalled Pete Kozma to bolster their bench.

This will be Descalso's first start at first base this season as Adams has started every game but one since Allen Craig's departure. With Mark Ellis hurt, Descalso was the only middle infielder on the bench until the Cardinals made a move Sunday to recall Kozma from Triple-A Memphis.

"We've been working Jhonny hard and Daniel's done a nice job, but [Kozma] gives us a little more backing," Matheny said.

Descalso, hitting eighth Sunday, started both games Saturday. In Game 2 of the double header, he had his sixth multi-hit game while scoring twice.

On the other side, Adams has gone 1-12 in the series against the Cubs with a .083 average.

Busting out the runs

Game 2 of Saturday's double header, the Cardinals scored 13 runs - the most since scoring 15 back on August 4, 2013 against the Cincinnati Reds. They scored 9 runs in the eighth inning, the most in an inning since April 7, 2013 against the San Francisco Giants and the most runs at Busch Stadium since August of 2012 against the Houston Astros.

"Yea we scored more than two runs in an inning, how about that?" Matheny joked Sunday, "Hopefully, it's just the beginning."
