COLLINSVILLE, Ill. ( – News 4 spoke with an Illinois State Police spokesperson and questioned whether the response to what happened in Ferguson would have been the same if it happened somewhere else.

The spokesperson said she could not comment on whether ISP officials thought their Missouri counterparts responded correctly, but did say officers must always be prepared to respond to any given situation.

The spokesperson said troopers in Illinois are trained to de-escalate situations in anyway, including the use of military force.

“After September 11, I think we can’t ignore the fact that law enforcement agencies must be prepared and have adequate training to be able to respond to an incident that could have a devastating impact on a community,” said Monique Bond, with the Illinois State Police.

Illinois State Police recently announced 55 cadets will head the police academy in mid-September. Of those 55 cadets, 45 percent are minorities.
