GOODLETTSVILLE, TN (WSMV) - A Goodlettsville mother was arrested after allegedly accidentally locking her child inside a hot car at church.
The mother was arrested Sunday night on child neglect charges at the Church of Living Water.
She said her child got trapped inside the car as the family was leaving church.
The mother told police she had asked her 12-year-old daughter to put the child in the car and that the daughter locked the keys in the car by accident after the boy was already in his seat.
"If there's a child locked in the car, you need to get us there as soon as possible because we need to get the child out," said Deputy Chief Mark Becknal with the Goodlettsville Fire Department.
Police said the temperature climbed to 99.7 degrees while the 1-year-old was trapped inside.
The mother had another family member run home to get a spare key, but they couldn't find it.
A witness called police for help. The Goodlettsville Fire Department responded to help rescue the child.
Police said the boy was inside the car for at least 15 minutes and was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center when authorities finally got the car open. He was later released from the hospital.
According to the arrest warrant, the child was in direct sunlight and was crying and sweating profusely before being taken by ambulance to the hospital.
"I think people need to understand that a car is like an oven," Becknal said.
