Union: 800 back at work at once-idled steel plant

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) -- A southwestern Illinois steel mill is back in business after months of being idled, and that's good news for hundreds of workers.

Union officials say about 800 workers laid off in recent months at the United States Steel Corp. plant in Granite City have been recalled, months after that factory stopped production.

The plant began the layoffs in December after the bottom abruptly fell out of the steel market as part of a global recession.

Dan Simmons is president of United Steelworkers of America union Local 1899. He says the restart of production at the plant signals that the economy may be recovering, even though other U.S. Steel mills remain idle.
