Korean War museum opens in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities in Springfield have dedicated a new museum devoted to the Korean War -- possibly the first of its kind in the nation.

The Denis J. Healy Freedom Center opened Friday. It's a 10,000-square-foot exhibit that includes several cases of Korean War artifacts and informational panels on the war. The exhibit is in the former Osco space on the Old Capitol Plaza.

Healy, a Korean War veteran, is chairman of Turtle Wax Inc. His donation funded the creation of the Springfield center.

The exhibit eventually will move to the Korean War National Museum planned to be built at Fifth and Madison streets. Groundbreaking on that museum is expected to happen next June, on the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War.
