S. Ill. woman accused of embezzling from bank

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- A southern Illinois bank worker is accused of stealing more than $166,000 on the job to cover her pilfering from a school's charitable account.

A federal indictment made public Thursday in East St. Louis alleges Michelle Knebel was a bookkeeper for the Highland School Charitable Foundation when she began stealing from that fund a decade ago.

When the foundation decided in 2007 to close its account at First Mid-Illinois Bank where Knebel worked, she allegedly made unauthorized transfers from the CD accounts of other customers to replenish the charity's account.

Calls to Knebel's home went unanswered Friday. It isn't immediately clear if she has an attorney.
