Coroner checking to see if heart problems caused elderly driver's crash with bus

(KMOV) -- An elderly man is dead after an accident in the Metro-East.

It happened just before 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Route 203, or Nameoki Road, and Venice Ave. in Granite City, Ill.

According to Major Jeff Connor, the assistant police chief of Granite City, the victim is Emerald E. Dawes, 86, of Granite City.

Connor says that Dawes pulled out in front of a Madison County Transit bus on Venice Ave. and the two vehicles collided in the intersection.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused Dawes to pull in front of the bus. The coroner is checking into whether or not Dawes had heart problems that may have played a role in the crash.

After the crash, Dawes was transported to Gateway Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. He was headed to the medical center when he crashed.

Connor says that the bus driver and two people riding the bus were injured. They were taken to a local hospital for treatment, but there injuries are not considered serious.

Dawes was a long-time barber and former alderman in Granite City. He was retired, but still offered free hair cuts to patients at Gateway Regional Medial Center.

He was alone in his car at the time of the crash.
