Missouri Highway Patrol: helmet requirement in place

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The Missouri Highway Patrol is reminding motorcyclists that the state's helmet requirement is still in place.

The patrol says officers have been noticing a large number of motorcycle operators riding without their helmets, assuming there's been a change in the law.

Current law requires all occupants of a motorcycle to wear a helmet, and the patrol says it is being strictly enforced.

A bill allowing most adults to ride helmet-free on most Missouri roads is pending before Gov. Jay Nixon. He has not said whether he will sign or veto it.

The legislation would lift the helmet requirement for motorcycle riders 21 and older when they're not traveling on interstate highways.
