City will save money on its electric bills

A resolution authorizing a new energy supply agreement for 38 of the city's 99 electrical service accounts won unanimous approval at Tuesday's meeting of the Edwardsville City Council and could save the city as much as $250,000 a year, council members were told.

The one-year agreement names Texas-based Constellation NewEnergy Inc. as the electrical provider for those accounts and retains Ameren as the electrical power distributor.

Previously the city has purchased power for the accounts directly from Ameren. Although primarily an electrical distributor, Ameren also sells electricity which it itself purchases from suppliers, City Attorney Jeffrey Berkbigler said.

The decision to switch accounts follows a study requested by city officials some time ago and conducted by Midwest Energy Alliance to review the city's electricity bills with Ameren in order to identify potential savings.
