Man gets 29 years in son's beating

EDWARDSVILLE - An Edwardsville man convicted of inflicting disabling injuries on two children was sentenced Thursday to 29 years in prison, one short of the maximum allowed under the law.

Associate Judge James Hackett imposed the sentence in Madison County Circuit Court after reading a quote from the Bible about those who harm children: "It would be better for them if a giant millstone were tied around their neck and they would be cast into the heart of the sea."

The judge sentenced Brandon L. Johnson, 29, after the mother of one of his previous victims testified that her child still was suffering developmental delays from a 2000 beating inflicted by Johnson.
