CHICAGO (AP) -- A published report says University of Illinois football coach Ron Zook is the highest paid employee at the state's public universities.
The Chicago Sun-Times says an analysis of records shows Zook was paid nearly $1 million last year. That's more than the salaries of 69,000 others who work in Illinois' public universities.
The newspaper says coaching staff were among the top earners even as Illinois' public universities have been raising tuition and fees. It says Chicago Bears' offensive coordinator Ron Turner was paid $235,000 by the University of Illinois last year as the final payment in a settlement reached five years ago when he was fired.
The Sun-Times says more than 5,200 university employees, including many medical school professors, were paid $100,000 or more last year.
