Ill. House approves raft of ethics measures

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois House has approved ethics bills giving state inspectors more power and improving oversight of how tax dollars are spent.

One bill would let state inspectors investigate anonymous tips about corruption. Right now, they can only act on signed complaints. The inspectors' findings could also be released to the public, something that is now prohibited.

The measure also strengthens "revolving door" provisions meant to keep state officials from going to work for companies they once regulated.

Another bill overhauls the process for buying goods and services. New procurement officers and monitors would try to make sure tax dollars are spent honestly instead of going to political insiders.

The two bills passed unanimously and now go to the Senate.
