EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Heavy rains in recent days pounded southwestern Illinois and may have claimed the newly installed, $250,000 gym floor at .
Officials at the university say the deluge poured through the Vadalabene Center roof that was being torn off and replaced.
University spokesman Greg Conroy says the extent of the damage won't be known until the floor is inspected by experts. But the damage could require replacing it.
The roof being repaired had been covered by plastic. But Conroy says that couldn't hold off storms as severe as the ones that bowled through the region Sunday and Monday.
A spokeswoman for the contractor says that company is cooperating with the university.
