MARION, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois State Police say they expect a 46-year-old Marion man to be charged with first-degree murder after finding a body buried in his yard.
State Police Master Sergeant Stan Diggs says Elmer Atkins Jr. will appear in court in Marion this afternoon. Diggs says Atkins' mother, 63-year-old Edna Atkins, will appear with her son and could face a lesser charge.
Authorities say the mother and son were arrested yesterday at the mobile home they share after a tip led police to the body of 51-year-old Matthew Lutchen of Marion.
Diggs says Lutchen was buried in a shallow grave just a few feet from the mobile home. Diggs says Lutchen had been dead for at least four months but investigators aren't sure how he died.
Diggs says Lutchen lived with the Atkins family and neighbors told investigators they hadn't seen him since late last year.
